St. Mary's
In the early 1920's Sister Hilary purchased this tract of Eastbench land from a bankrupt developer who had intended to build a golf course here. They established the St.Mary of the Wasatch Academy for Girls.

In a letter to the Propagation of the Faith, Father Scanlan wrote in 1879: ´through your contributions?we have been able to bring here a handsome colony of sisters who have already firmly established themselves in Salt Lake City?the outlook was wild and gloomy, but they were not discouraged?full of the spirit of their calling..."
The Academy was opened in September of 1926 as an all-girls school "K" through "12" and College. The school was located on 1300 South and 3000 East and closed in 1950.
The Sisters of the Academy sold 135 acres of adjacent property in 1957 (1300 South to Wasatch Blvd) in 1957 to a local developer (Grant Muhlestein) for "almost almost a million dollars". The first homes sold in the St.Mary's subdivision fetched $45,000.
Today the St.Mary's (fly there) area is highly sought after due to it's proximity to downtown, the U of U, and the breathtaking views from it's hillside perch.
Homes range in price from about $400k to $3m. Higher prices are typically found in locations further East near the Wasatch Mountains.
As for the ill-fated golf course, there is always Bonneville Golf Course which is located just a few hundred yards away.
The Hogle Zoo is located here and the Red Butte Gardens are a "must see". St. Mary's is one of the most sought after areas in the Salt Lake Valley....and for good reason....it has everything!
