Capitol Hill

Photo taken from Capitol Heights

Steep narrow streets, old and historic homes with varied architectural styles, and breathtaking views......no, its not San Francisco, its Capitol Hill. Widely considered to be the oldest residential area in Salt Lake, these homes date back to 1850.

Capitol Hill was first known as Arsenal Hill because the territorial arsenal was located at the hill's crest. In 1876 four people were killed when 40 tons of blasting powder ignited-- the State Capitol Builing now occupies this site.

Follow Capitol Blvd around the capitol and up the hill and you are now entering Capitol Heights. Many of the homes were built in the past 40 years and new contruction is evident on many in-fill lots.

Often these homes have stunning views of the city, mountains, and valley. City Creek Canyon is nearby and offers mountain biking and hiking in addtion to being a main corridor to accessing hundreds of miles of Bonneville Shorline Trails (see photo above). It feels like you could throw a rock into the city you are so close!

This area often provides refuge from the inversions that often settle into the valley in winter.

Many of the regal historic mansions have been made into Bed & Breakfast Inns. But some still survive and are available for purchase.
